‘You feel like you’re getting your power back’: how martial arts helps recovery from trauma

Having lived experience of trauma and it’s effects, discovering jiu-jitsu has been life-changing.

Jiu-jitsu gives you a sense of empowerment and a feeling of gaining control of your body, so removing the barriers to entry for trauma survivors (and any women looking for a safe and friendly environment to try jiu-jitsu) is a big passion of mine.

I’m feeling very humbled to have been approached by the Guardian in regards to Grapple Isle’s women-only trauma-informed jiu-jitsu program and the benefits of martial arts for trauma recovery.
